Some people prefer it with milk, others prefer it without - we're talking about milk in coffee. Would you have thought that adding a dash of milk to your coffee changes much more than just the flavour and calorie content? We give you an insight into the latest study results on the health effects of the combination of coffee and milk.
Coffee with milk: polyphenols and amino acids
There are many myths surrounding the health effects of coffee and hardly any other drink is discussed more than this hot favourite. There is no doubt that coffee has a vitalising effect on most consumers and is an integral part of everyday life for millions of people worldwide. Coffee is also said to have a beneficial effect on cardiovascular function and intestinal activity. Some people prefer to drink it classically black, while others like a dash of milk in their coffee or enjoy a creamy latte macchiato or cappuccino.
New studies from Denmark have now shown that the combination of milk and coffee is said to have a particularly beneficial effect on health. Coffee as such contains many polyphenols. Polyphenols (also known as antioxidants) are naturally occurring substances that are found not only in coffee but also in some types of fruit and vegetables, for example. These substances prevent or delay the oxidation of healthy chemical substances and organs in our body and thus protect them from damage or destruction. In simple terms, polyphenols have a particularly anti-inflammatory effect on the body.
Cow's milk, on the other hand, is very rich in protein. In turn, the proteins it contains consist of a combination of many amino acids. According to the Danish study, this special combination of polyphenols and amino acids is twice as effective in combating inflammation in the body as polyphenols alone would be. So is coffee with milk the miracle weapon in the fight against inflammation? So far, the experiments have only been carried out on cells and with cow's milk. It has therefore not yet been proven whether the anti-inflammatory effect is similarly strong in humans. It is also unclear whether a similar effect can be achieved by adding plant-based milk to coffee.
